Astaxanthin is a carotenoid (plant colouring), found in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crayfish, crustaceans, and the feathers of some birds. Astaxanthin can be extracted from all of these sources and can also be synthesised. Synthetic Astaxanthin is used as a natural food colourant and is used for example to make farmed salmon redder in colour. The Astaxanthin that is derived from micro algae, such as Bio-Xanthin Astaxanthin is by far the most potent. Like many carotenoids, it is a colourful, fat/oil-soluble pigment. Astaxanthin, unlike some carotenoids, does not convert to Vitamin A (retinol) in the human body. Too much Vitamin A is toxic for a human, but Astaxanthin is not. It is a powerful anti oxidant which is 50 times more powerful than beta carotene and 500 times more powerful than vitamin E. Hawaiian Natural Astaxanthin assists in protecting the body from the damaging effects of free radicals and supports the health and function of the immune system. Hawaiian Natural Astaxanthin supports the health and function of the immune system and may help to reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and maintain a healthy HDL:LDL ratio.
